21st November 2017 saw the first concert of our sixth season, a superb recital by the young Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov. The first half consisted of intriguing pairings of pieces from Debussy’s Children’s Corner suite with shorter works by Chopin, interspersed by two modern pieces by Lachenmann. In the second half Pavel gave us more Chopin, including the Fantaisie-Impromptu and F minor Fantasie, and concluded his recital with Debussy’s Estampes. This was a truly great evening, by a young master and poet of the keyboard. One of our regular audience, Joe Edwards, has written a review of this concert here

11th April 2018 saw a memorable concert by the Castalian Quartet, chosen by YCAT in 2016, and recently winners of the inaugural Merito String Quartet and Valentin Erben Prize, which was presented to them in Vienna on 23rd April. The quartet gave a scintillating account of Haydn’s Op 76 in G major, and followed this with the more brooding Schumann A minor quartet, Op 41. After the interval we had a memorable performance of the well-known “Rosamunde” quartet by Schubert. This was playing of the very highest order – superb ensemble, intonation and musicality, whilst never seeming forced or mannered in any way. Many thanks again to Sini Simonen (violin), Daniel Roberts (violin), Charlotte Bonneton (viola) and Christopher Graves (cello) for a superb evening’s music-making.

The final concert in our 2017/18 season on 4th July 2018 featured the Aquinas Piano Trio, plus Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola) and Leon Bosch (double bass). Numbers on stage built up gradually as the evening progressed, starting with Schubert’s lyrical string trio in B flat, followed by Brahms’s dark and brooding piano quartet in C minor. After the interval, Leon Bosch joined forces with the others for a superb performance of Schubert’s Trout quintet – a wonderful end to our sixth season!
